Biography of
H. James Bond
Jim started galloping horses when he was 11 years old. He took out his trainer’s license at the age of 16. Jim began his career at Finger Lakes Race Track and moved his operation to Saratoga and Belmont in 1990.
Jim is a very approachable and recognizable trainer. He has always had comments on his famous name so he decided he might as well have some fun with it. All of his horses train with saddle pads with the logo 007 on them. You will see the 007 signs on his private 40 Stall barn on Gridley Street in Saratoga Springs, NY. You cannot miss the big blue and white air ride 12 horse van that ships most of Jim’s race horses around the country and to Canada. The van is camera equipped.
Jim has had much success. Among his success, Devious Course won the Nashua and the Cigar Mile. In 1995, he trained L’Carriere to finish second in the Breeders Cup Classic behind Cigar. L’Carriere went on to the Dubai World Cup and finished third in the Inaugural Dubai World Cup. In 1996, Will’s Way won the Travers Stake at Saratoga and came back in 1997 to win the Whitney Handicap. Behrens won the Gulfstream Park Handicap twice, Oaklawn Handicap, Suburban, and Dwyer. Behrens ran second in the Travers and in the Whitney Handicap. Behrens went to Dubai to run in the Dubai World cup in 1998 and in 2000 when he ran second to Dubai Millennium. He won the Turf Classic Invitational and the Man o’ War with Val’s Prince. Jim guided Mongoose to win the Donn Handicap and Buddha to win the Wood Memorial.
Jim was named New York Trainer of the Year 5 times. He trained New York Horse of the Year Mr. Groush. Mr. Groush was born and raised on Jim’s farm Song Hill Farm. Please visit the Stakes Page for a complete list.
One of Jim’s greatest accomplishments is retaining his long-time employees and his long-time clientele. Jim is very appreciative to his clients for the great horses that they have entrusted in him.
Jim is married to Tina Marie and they have two sons, Kevin and Ryan. In addition to the racing stable, Jim and Tina have 100 acre farm named Song Hill Thoroughbreds LLC in the town of Stillwater, NY. This farm compliments the racing stable. They have been breeding horses for over 20 years. They moved their operation to Stillwater in 2005. Please visit the website songhillthoroughbreds.com
